Sagada Mountain Province, Philippines
June 4, 2009 | 2,191 views
In the midst of the Cordillera mountains in Mountain Province, Philippines lies a small enchanting town called SAGADA. A place known for its rice terraces, hanging coffins and a milieu of other breathtaking sceneries, Sagada offers an ideal haven to its inhabitants and a taste of “Shangri-la” to intrepid enough visitors.
Places of Interest
Sagada has many natural wonders. Backpackers and tourists can enjoy the waters of Bokong and Bomod-ok Falls. Other places that can be visited are:
Sumaguing and Lumiang Caves
Sumaguing Cave has the largest chamber of all connecting caves in town. One needs to trek down a slippery trail from its mouth to see the magnificent formations of stalactites and stalagmites that took thousands of years to shape. These formations were carefully sculpted by nature itself to form contours that were given fancy names such as king and queen’s curtains, giant fudge, pregnant woman, mickey mouse, alligator, dancing hall and rice terraces. Inside are underground streams and natural pools with water temperature near freezing point. Be ready to get wet and chill as the adventure includes crossing a waist-deep pool.
Bomod-ok and Bokong Falls
The Bomod-ok Falls – or simply the Big Falls — is one of Sagada’s most visited and sought-after attractions. Despite being one of the few sites of interest that is a few minutes’ hike from the town center, countless visitors still brave the long trek to admire the 200-feet tall column of water as it splashes down on the cold pools below.
As one could easily see in this picture, the Bokong Falls is definitely no where near the size and majestic beauty of the Bomod-ok Falls (Big Falls) but since it’s just a few minutes’ walk from the town center, it’s still worth your time. The waterfall is located at the edge of rice fields and the water drops from a height of above 20 feet. It’s no higher than a usual diving board but it’s still a rush to jump off its highest point.
Echo Valley
beautiful views of lime stones, with some hanging coffins visible. A nice place to sit and just chill in silence of the wind in between the pine trees. From the view deck, can trail down to the echo valley floor which is another mesmerizing and enchanting place.
Underground River
A very enchanting cave containing some burial coffins, and some pretty sparkly formation of rock minerals and ancient corals.

Can anyone tell me if it is dangerous to travel from Manilla to Sagada…my aunty (who is filipino) says it is dangerous particularly for “whites” due to rebels and we are about to travel there in September 2009 and would like to go to the health resort but her phone call today has made me re-think our plans…can anyone advise me..thanks so much for any information

Hello Julia,
Sagada is guaranteed safe. Koreans, Aussies, Americans, English, and other foreigners are just a normal everyday view. It is probably the most visited provincial area in north of Manila. Never did I know that their are rebels who prey on tourists. It is totally safe. I know of some foreigners who chose to live in Sagada after their visit, and some have built their own properties there.
My friend, Tom Coghill is a British, and he specializes on fasting as an alternative medicine in partnership with St Theodores Hospital in Sagada. A place which is a must see.
